Extensive Tornado Damage in Mississippi Friday

The two-sided coin of loving extreme weather is understanding the reality of what it can do when it cuts such a destructive path through property and people’s lives.  And when those tornadoes hit during the night hours when it’s pitch-black and people are less aware of the weather and the warning sirens, too many are at the mercy of an unpredictable and powerful storm. Unfortunately, that is what happened in the late, overnight hours Friday.  A mile-wide tornado which began in northeast Louisiana, went across Mississippi and Alabama and left a nearly 100-mile path of destruction. Today Mississippi especially is mourning the loss of at least 25 of her residents and Alabama has lost one. In particular, the city of Rolling Fork, MS was essentially completely devastated.

Emergency search and rescue is currently underway since there are still people trapped in their homes.  A FEMA team is also en route to the areas hit.  Disaster relief groups such as Samaritan’s Purse already have teams on their way to help with clearing debris, bring tangible resources like water and food to displaced individuals, prayer support, as well as long-term teams to help rebuild and assist.

If you would like to donate to a trusted, disaster-relief organization, visit www.samaritanspurse.org.  They also have opportunities to go to Mississippi in teams and be a hands-on part of the relief.
