Perseids Meteor Shower August 12-13

The Perseids Meteor Shower is considered one of the best showers to watch in DFW with the best sighting potential besides the Geminids meteor shower! It runs from July 17th – August 24th but tonight is the peak night of the shower! For areas with minimal light pollution, you can expect to see anywhere between 50-100 meteors per hour. Because the moon is nearing a New Moon, the skies will be much darker allowing for more meteors to be seen. Make sure to check WC’s Space Weather Outlook page for more information!

Remember to prepare for the weather appropriately during your star gazing! Follow these steps to ensure the best experience possible!

Get out of the city, if possible, to an area with little light pollution
Check the weather to adequately prepare for the conditions
Allow 20 minutes for your eyes to adjust to the darker skies above
Avoid using any devices. This will expose your eyes to bright lights

Look out at the Northeast sky TONIGHT anywhere between 10 PM – 5 AM to see the Perseids meteor shower! 10 PM is when the shower becomes visible above the horizon for DFW and 5 AM is when the shower is approximately halfway up the Northeastern sky (45 degrees).

Happy meteor shower gazing!
