Single Digits and Snow Chances For DFW

It’s going to feel like Winter in DFW really soon! The arctic blast is making its way down south to North Texas to bring single-digit temperatures and sub-zero wind chills in addition to some snow chances. The time starts now to start preparing for the cold snap and the possible winter weather DFW could face next week.

There is a chance for snow Sunday evening through Monday. DFW has a chance of seeing up to 1 inch of snow and 0.10 – 0.20 inches of ice accumulation. Freezing rain is possible but is more likely further south of the metroplex. The forecast is still not with 100% confidence, so things could change and the numbers for actual accumulation may change too. Moisture is a huge factor, and the more moisture that is in the atmosphere at the time of the winter weather, the more accumulation DFW could get.

There has been talk about things escalating and DFW experiencing a minor winter storm. This would mean higher accumulation amounts, more dangerous travel conditions, and/or potentially more power outages. This scenario is looking unlikely but WC is still monitoring the issue.

Travel and power loss are big topics for when winter weather strikes DFW. Will we be seeing any issues with this storm for DFW? Possibly. Travel will be affected if there is winter precipitation of any kind because temperatures will be cold enough to allow for accumulation on roadways. Luckily, many roads are already being treated in preparation for winter weather. Even still, please remain extremely cautious on roadways. Power loss will become a greater issue if there is freezing rain in DFW, but as of now, the chance is fairly low.

Winter Forecast 3 Day

Remember to winterize your home and prepare for the winter snap! Practice the 4 P’s and ensure you have taken the proper winter weather precautions.

Remember the 4 P’s!

Plants – Put heavy warm blankets over your plants. With this extreme cold, your plants won’t stand a chance without proper protection. Take in all delicate plants to keep them alive.
Pets – If you own any pets, do not let them wander outdoors for extended periods of time or be unsupervised! Temperatures this low can be extremely hazardous for your pet!
Pipes – Cover your outdoor pipes properly! Temperatures close to zero can produce more issues than just to your outdoor pipes. Make sure to set all your external faucets in your house or apartment to drip slowly to prevent freezes in the pipeline! For pool owners, make sure to run your pool equipment through these low temperatures in order to prevent freezes! Cover your equipment with heavy warm blankets to provide better protection.
People – Last of all and most importantly, protect yourself and others! Make sure your neighbors have what they need to get through this cold and that they won’t go out during these frigid temperatures unprepared. Minimize trips outdoors and wear proper clothing to keep warm. Hypothermia can set quickly especially with wind chills in the negatives.

Winter Weather Preparations

Supplies – Make sure you are stocked up on supplies and food so that when winter weather strikes and roadways are dangerous, you can have what you need if you are trapped at home!
Batteries / Generator – If you own a generator or a large-capacity portable battery, make sure they are ready to go before the winter storm hits. If power loss occurs, you will be able to have an external power source for staying warm and providing power!
Home – Make sure your outdoor and exterior indoor pipes are covered properly! If temperatures are near zero, make sure to set all your external faucets in your house or apartment to drip slowly to prevent freezes in the pipeline. Close blinds for windows to keep heat in and make sure your heating unit works properly
Vehicles – Remember to check the anti-freeze on your vehicle to ensure it is ready to survive the winter weather. If you have to go out during extreme cold, make sure to let the engine warm up extra long to preserve engine health. If you have to go out during icy road conditions, remember to practice EXTREME caution, reduce speeds, don’t do excessive braking, and increase car distance by up to 10 times!
