Easter Sunday Severe Weather Recap

Severe Weather has struck again… and it has made its mark.

Easter Sunday Severe Weather Recap

A strong Storm System moved in on Saturday 4/11/20 which started this whole thing. Forecasts showed a potential for very strong winds, large hail, and tornadoes. They were right.

Stats

  • At least 34 People are dead in the trail of these deadly tornadoes.
  • 45+ TORNADOES
  • At least 11 people were killed in Mississippi.
  • Seven died when storms tore through mobile home parks near the Georgia-Tennessee border.
  • More than 1.2 million homes and businesses were without power after the devastating damage
  • 1,000’s of homes destroyed.

Texas Impacts:

Storms began to fire up about 150 miles west of DFW and they grew and became quickly severe as they moved North East. The predictions on SPC showed this for the following areas:

Storms began to strengthen and soon, a Tornado Warning was issued with one particular Super cell that was over Longview Texas. Here is a picture of a beautiful shelf cloud:

Sooo, you may be asking, why did DFW seem to get nothing?

  1. This storm system was very complex and hard to forecast
  2. SPC Outlooks are just a general idea of what storm development we are looking at and where it could form. IT IS NOT EXACT BY ANY MEANS
  3. Sometimes we get stuff wrong in our predictions 🙂
  4. DFW did get something, just not EVERYTHING.

Mississippi, Louisiana, Alabama:

Over 30 People Died in these states alone and counting. Many Tornadoes were reported as they ravaged through mobile home neighborhoods, grocery stores, residential housing, etc. Many of the deaths caused were actually from either :

  1. Unawareness of the imminent tornado danger.
  2. In a vehicle in the time of the tornado.
  3. Simply just not in a sturdy enough building.

These storms cannot be taken lightly and must be prepared for and reported accurately so that we can protect people and save lives the next time storms come.

What can I do about it?

1, Donate to the RED CROSS to help people whose lives are in danger or have been affected by the terrible storm and clean up and repair.

2, Prepare and go over your safety drills and preparation measure for when severe storms are coming to your area. Do a TORNADO WARNING drill (gather all your household members and pets, flashlight, first aid, and go IMMEDIATELY to your safe room).

3, Take Storms seriously. Take action when there is a Severe Thunderstorm Warning or Tornado Warning. Your life counts…
